REVIEW: Penny Pinchers Club

by Tarah on February 8, 2010

By Sarah Strohmeyer

July 2009

Dutton Adult

ISBN: 0525951172

Katarina “Kat” Griffiths has a wonderful life, sure her job working as an assistant for a tyrannical interior designer sucks, but she has a beautiful daughter and a loving husband.  At least that is what she thinks when she is unpacking his things from a business trip and sees something it seems she shouldn’t have. She finds two empty condom wrappers in his suitcase and when she goes to confirm her suspicions on his computer she finds an open email from his assistant to him that looks borderline risque and mentions how after their daughter graduates he plans on leaving Kat for her!

Completely devastated and not very much money to her name Kat is at a complete loss.  She decides she is not going to take this lying down and will prepare herself as best she can for his eventual departure.  First on her list is to earn more money and the first step she takes to achieve that goal is to accept an invitation from her cleaning lady to join the Penny Pinchers Club, a local group which meets once a month to discuss and flaunt how to save money.  Whether its the stereotypical coupon clipping or buying store brands they always have ideas, but what they also give which to me is priceless, is give Kat a family.  Each of them has very different pasts that have brought them together, but they help each other when needed whether its financial advice or a good listening ear.

On top of this an old flame comes back to town, which confuses her even further. This book is a definite read.  I have read almost every book that Sarah has written, from her other singles such as The Cinderella Pact and The Sleeping Beauty Proposal to her old series with Bubbles.  As with the others there is some writers ingredient she throws in to keep me coming back.  So, whether this is your first by her or your fifth I suggest picking it up. P.S. There is a nifty list in the back on how you too can save some major cash.

by Tarah on January 27, 2010

For me The Devil Wears Prada is what started my obsession with chick lit.  So when I read online that her newest novel comes out soon I had to share the news with all my readers.

The book is called Last Night at Chateau Marmont that is going to be released May 25, 2010.   No info as of yet could be found during my usual snooping on amazon so I will have to keep you posted.

Emily Giffin is also coming out with a novel, also to be released in my called Heart of the Matter. So, keep a look out for that one too.  The snow hasn’t even melted and already it looks like its going to be another great summer for lovers of chick lit.

Killer Deal

Killer Deal By Sheryl J. Anderson

St. Martin

July 2007

ISBN-10: 0312949367

ISBN-13: 978-0312949365

Molly Forrester is a not so starving advice columnist for a daily called the “Ziegrest”.  Doling out advice for her though isn’t very fufilling, her dream is to become a features writer and be able to write the stories that appear above the fold.

Recently, a big-wig, Garth Harrison of GHInc. was shot to death in his hotel room with the killer still a mystery.  Many fingers point to ex-wife Gwen Lincoln who because of his death stands to inherit half his business along with fellow advertising exec and former arch nemesis Ronnie Willis of Willis Inc. getting the other half. (real creative names huh?)  So when Molly is asked by her pseudo demonic editor Eileen to do a profile on Gwen she jumps at the chance to be able to get to the bottom of this real life  who-done-it.

Another possible set of suspects is a group of girls that used to work for Garth called (behind their backs) the Harem.  This group of 5 lovely ladies was the creative backbone to the company and they completely abhor the idea of having to work with Gwen as their superior.

This book takes a close albeit caddy look at the politics of big business and what it takes to get to the top.

Nanny Returns

By Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus

December 2009

Atria

ISBN-10:  1416585672

ISBN-13: 978-1416585671

So….I have officially finished my first book read via my new (to me anyway) Kindle!  The book I chose  for this oh so exciting maiden voyage is Nanny Returns by Emma McLaughlin & Nicola Kraus.

We join Nanny ten years after where the first book leaves off.  She has recently moved back to NY after a fair amount of time globe-hopping with her husband who works for the UN.  I am happy to note that said husband is Ryan ( A.K.A Harvard Hottie) who she has been married to for six years.

Nanny  has also started a business venture of her very own where she is a HR consultant. Before you even ask I really have no idea what that means and it isn’t exactly explained very well in the book either.  Her first big project is working as a Board of Trustee’s & Faculty go-between at a new up-and-coming prep school called Jarndyce which is a holy mess so Nan definitely has her work cut out for her.   On top of that the new house that she and Ryan purchased is a huge undertaking, as much of the house needs to be completely redone.

Now, let’s not forget the X’s the family who, in the first book made Nanny’s life a living hell for nine months, they were not forgotten in this book either.  Sadly, though Grayer is now ten years older and has a little brother but, his parents unfortunatly have not gotten wiser.

I really liked this novel.  It does a good job of including all readers whether they have read the first novel or not.  The story still has Nan’s trademark wit and sarcasm so the Nan many loved in novel number one is not lost.  What I didn’t like as much though that I saw commented on a bit on the Amazon feedback section was the fact that though she has grown up she is still too much of a doormat like she was in the first novel.  It made more sense in the first novel because she was a college student, fresh faced and still pretty naive about the real world.  For a thirty-something though that characterization is kinda out of place and I would have liked to see a bit more development in terms of that.  Despite its fiobles though I definitely suggest you pick up this book as it is still a pretty good read.

IM BACK!!!

by Tarah on December 29, 2009

Hello all!

I am back from my hella long hiatus and ready to put my nose back to the grindstone and make this site great.  As you know (unless you live under a rock) Christmas was a few days ago.  I got what I have wanted for YEARS and that is an Amazon Kindle!  Its a number 1 verson not a number 2 which is a good thing because I have heard and you will have to fill me in, that number 2 has some bugs including really poor book organization. Ive already bought a few book for it with some money i got from my oh so spoiling me grandparents.

Its going to be so much easier to get copies I want to review for you all, england being so far away I can never order unless I want to spend an arm and a leg for shipping.  Now I can just buy an E-book which a lot of publishing house sites have now.

So, like I said I’m back and stay tuned because it’s only going to get better from here on out.

I was doing my usual snooping around around Amazon and found out that Jennifer has a new title coming out July 14th! I sooooo cannot wait! The book will for sure be reviewed here so keep your eyes peeled. To wet you appetites here is the synopsis courtesy of Amazon.

Addie Downs and Valerie Adler will be best friends forever. That’s what Addie believes after Valerie moves across the street when they’re both nine years old. But in the wake of betrayal during their teenage years, Val is swept into the popular crowd, while mousy, sullen Addie becomes her school’s scapegoat.

Flash-forward fifteen years. Valerie Adler has found a measure of fame and fortune working as the weathergirl at the local TV station. Addie Downs lives alone in her parents’ house in their small hometown of Pleasant Ridge, Illinois, caring for a troubled brother and trying to meet Prince Charming on the Internet. She’s just returned from Bad Date #6 when she opens her door to find her long-gone best friend standing there, a terrified look on her face and blood on the sleeve of her coat. “Something horrible has happened,” Val tells Addie, “and you’re the only one who can help.”

Best Friends Forever is a grand, hilarious, edge-of-your-seat adventure; a story about betrayal and loyalty, family history and small-town secrets. It’s about living through tragedy, finding love where you least expect it, and the ties that keep best friends together.

REVIEW: Love The One Your With

by Tarah on April 7, 2009

In honor of this title being put into paperback this month I decided to republish this review from the old site. Its a great book I have enjoyed every single Emily Giffin I have read and would urge those of you who read this to go out an get it especially now that in paperback it will be cheaper! *smiles*

By Emily Giffin

April 21, 2009

St. Martin’s Press

ISBN-10: 0312348665

ISBN-13:978-0312348663

From the woman that brought you Something Borrowed, Something Blue and Baby Proof is her newest release Love the One You’re With. In this title we are introduced to Ellen, a recently married woman who has a chance encounter with an old but intense flame that makes her question the choices she has made to date.

Ellen is a semi successful photographer in NYC who is married to what most may think is the perfect man. Andy is a sweet, thoughtful and compassionate man of means, who is the brother of her best friend of Margot who she met in college. Ellen had always had a casual eye on him, but was in a relationship with a rather trite intense and brooding man by the name of Leo. Leo, however, was not as committed to their relationship as she first thought and she one day wakes up and realizes he has vanished seemingly forever. A little more then half a year later Andy FINALLY gets the guts to ask her out, hoping that a significant enough time has passed since her breakup that she might accept. She does (obviously) and a year or so later they are married.

Another year or so goes by and while making her way back home at the end of a busy workday, she sees Leo just casually walking across the street two years since their last meeting as if no time has gone by. The decide to meet up at a diner nearby and catch up, Ellen telling him about her still newlywed marriage and him telling her of his successful writing career. This meeting instantly brings feelings of anger, resentment and strangely, longing into her heart confusing her all over again about whether she made the right choice in not waiting longer and marrying Andy.

As are all Emily Giffin titles that I have read previously, this title is no less superb then it’s other siblings. Emily mixes all the emotion of love, loss and regret perfectly, keeping the reader guessing who will ultimately be chosen once and for all till the very last chapters. I highly recommend this title, whether you have read other books by this author or not is not necessary, as it is a stand alone story on its own. So, pick it up, snuggle into your ideal reading spot, whether it be with a coffee or a Cosmo and read on!
